Improvisation and Performance Art

.

Just a teaser ...

Improvisation and Performance - these two categories could be discussed each in several books and would never be finally defined. For different people both of these words bring such different meanings and experiences. Ask two people from the same performance company what defines good improvisation. You would get two very different versions. It's like falling in love. Everyone knows what falling in love means. Well, almost everyone. Yet, not every one falls in love with everyone and in the same way. Most of the time, at the very first sight you can tell weather you might fall in love with someone or not. With improvisation and performance it is very different. Lots of people would tell you that they love improvisation. All of them would say they know what improvisation is. And everyone might tell you which performances are good and which are bad. Two people might get together and start talking about improvisation and performance. They might even agree to start a performance group. But until they actually try improvising and performing together they might not know if they speak about the same thing or not. Most likely they wouldn't.

...

While those two things appear to be so different for everyone, still lots of us love to improvise solo or together with someone. And those who were doing it for decades continuing to come up with tools and exercises to help us understand each other a little bit better. While all of them designed to bust your improvisational sight, hearing and taste, none of the tools replace improvisation itself. Yet when we use them we all learn to extend our abilities and communicate our impulses with others clearly.

Somatics offers a specific viewpoint on improvisation and performance. It provides a comprehensive analytical method, flexible exploration structures, multidimensional integrative approach and variable application.
